Apollo at Rila Monastery area

The forested foothills surrounding Rila Monastery, sitting at around 1,100m with Bulgaria's highest peaks rising beyond, offer a striking backdrop for photographing the Apollo butterfly, a species found throughout the Rila range & its high cirques. July visits give the best chance of finding these butterflies settled among the vegetation of the lower slopes, monastery spires & mountain scenery combining in the background. This area is one of the key sites visited during the Bulgarian Mountain Butterfly Macro holiday, where the contrast between historic architecture & high-altitude wilderness makes for a memorable setting. Patience among the foothill meadows here should reward photographers with good views of this striking species against a genuinely unique Bulgarian landscape.
