NaturesLens runs small-group wildlife photography holidays in Norway, with itineraries designed around Arctic Fox, Arctic Hare, Atlantic Puffin, Black Guillemot & Black-legged Kittiwake rather than general sightseeing. Current Norway departures include Winter Wildlife of Arctic Varanger, with time planned for hide, boat-based, flight & night or low-light photography sessions. Why Photograph Wildlife in Norway Norway’s dramatic coastline, fjords, & Arctic archipelagos create some of the most visually striking backdrops in European wildlife photography. Our Norway trips focus on two distinct experiences: Killer Whales (Orca) in the Vesterålen & Lofoten fjords during winter herring aggregations, & White-tailed Eagles, Goshawks, & Puffins on the open coast & sea cliffs in spring & summer. Orca photography in northern Norway is genuinely exceptional - the animals follow enormous herring shoals into shallow fjords during November & December, creating close-range encounters from boats & occasionally from shore. Surface activity, breaching, & cooperative bubble-net feeding all occur in light that shifts from pale gold to deep blue within a single session. Spring seabird colonies, including large Atlantic Puffin gatherings on Røst & Lofoten, bring softer light & extraordinary close-approach opportunities with nesting birds. Photographic Conditions Winter orca trips require fast telephoto work - 400-600mm for boat-based shooting with high ISO capability in limited Arctic light. Puffin & eagle sessions in late spring suit a wider range of focal lengths (200-500mm), with the long Nordic evenings providing warm directional light well past 10pm. Snow-covered fjord backgrounds in winter create high-contrast scenes that reward careful exposure. Photography Themes Norway offers outstanding opportunities for wildlife photography, with the chance to photograph species such as Arctic Fox, Arctic Hare, Gyrfalcon, Golden Eagle, Sea Otter, Harbour Seal, Red Fox, White-tailed Eagle, Whooper Swan, Rock Ptarmigan, Willow Ptarmigan, Northern Gannet & Great Skua. These highlighted species represent only a small part of the wildlife found across the area, with many more species present depending on habitat, region & seasonal conditions. Trips in Norway are led by our team of photographers, including Alison Jenkins, offering experienced guidance throughout.
