NaturesLens runs small-group wildlife photography holidays in Poland, with itineraries designed around Bison, Common Buzzard, European Bison, European Elk & Great Grey Owl rather than general sightseeing. Current Poland departures include Wildlife of Białowieża Forest, with time planned for hide, flight, night or low-light & landscape & behaviour photography sessions. Why Photograph Wildlife in Poland Poland holds two of Europe’s most distinctive wildlife photography destinations, both very different in character. Białowieża Forest - a UNESCO World Heritage Site straddling the Polish-Belarusian border - is the largest remnant of primeval lowland forest in Europe & the last stronghold of the wild European Bison. These prehistoric-looking animals are the continent’s heaviest land mammal & can be approached on foot with a local guide through old-growth forest that has never been cleared. In the Masurian Lake District to the north, a very different subject awaits: Ospreys (Fish Eagles) nesting above freshwater lakes, photographable from hides at distances that allow frame-filling flight & fishing shots. The wetland landscape of Masuria also holds White-tailed Eagles, Black Storks, & breeding Cranes, making it one of Poland’s most productive regions for a wider bird photography agenda. Photographic Conditions European Bison in Białowieża are most approachable in winter (December through March) when snow reveals tracks & the animals gather at supplementary feeding points. Osprey nesting activity peaks April through July; purpose-built hides at lake-edge nests allow 200-400mm portrait work. The forest’s interior light is diffuse & low - high ISO capability & image stabilisation are important tools for bison work among the trees. Photography Themes Poland offers outstanding opportunities for wildlife photography, with the chance to photograph species such as European Bison, Grey Wolf, White-tailed Eagle, Ural Owl, Golden Eagle, Black Stork, Common Crane, Hazel Grouse & Wild Boar. These highlighted species represent only a small part of the wildlife found across the area, with many more species present depending on habitat, region & seasonal conditions. Trips in Poland are led by our team of photographers, including David Miles, offering experienced guidance throughout.
