Species profile
About this species
The European Bison, also known as the wisent, is the heaviest land animal in Europe, with males weighing up to 920 kg. Once extinct in the wild, it was successfully reintroduced through captive breeding programmes & now roams forests & grasslands across parts of Europe. It is closely related to the American Bison but is taller, less heavily built, & has a less pronounced shoulder hump.
Temperate broadleaf & mixed forests, forest clearings, & adjacent grasslands & river valleys, primarily in Eastern Europe including the Bialowieza Forest of Poland & Belarus.

Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning & late afternoon during autumn & winter offer the best light & increased animal activity. The rutting season in late August to October provides opportunities to photograph dramatic behaviours between males.
Use a long telephoto lens of at least 400mm to maintain a safe distance while capturing detailed portraits of these large & potentially dangerous animals. Shoot from a low angle when possible to emphasise the imposing bulk & presence of the bison against the forest backdrop. Patience is essential - observe the herd quietly & wait for natural behaviours such as grazing, social interaction, or movement through dappled woodland light.
