Species profile
About this species
The Ural Owl is a large, pale greyish-brown owl found across boreal & temperate forests from Scandinavia to Japan. It has a rounded head without ear tufts, dark brown eyes, & a long tail that distinguishes it from similar species. Known for its bold defensive behaviour, it will readily mob & attack intruders near its nest site.
Dense boreal & mixed woodland forests, particularly areas with mature trees offering natural cavities for nesting. Commonly found in old-growth taiga, forest edges near open clearings & meadows across northern & central Eurasia.

Field notes
Photography notes
Late winter to early spring during the breeding season, particularly at dusk & dawn when adults are most active near the nest. February to April offers the best chances as owls are highly territorial & vocal.
Position yourself near known nest cavities or nest boxes in spring when adults are actively feeding chicks, as this greatly increases sighting opportunities. Use a long telephoto lens of at least 400mm to maintain a respectful distance & avoid disturbing the birds, particularly during the breeding season. Shoot in overcast conditions to avoid harsh shadows on the owls pale plumage & achieve even, flattering light.
