Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning throughout the year is ideal, though winter & early spring offer the most rewarding opportunities when the squirrels are highly active foraging & their ear tufts are at their most prominent against snowy backdrops.
Position yourself near conifer trees or feeding stations in the early morning when the squirrels are most active, using a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to capture close-up portraits without disturbing the animal. Use a fast shutter speed of 1/500s or higher to freeze the squirrel's quick movements, & shoot in burst mode to capture dynamic behaviour such as leaping between branches. In winter, the white snow background provides excellent contrast against the squirrel's warm reddish fur, making it an ideal season for striking & colourful images.
