Fiery-throated Hummingbird at San Gerardo de Dota

San Gerardo de Dota, a steep cloud forest valley cut by a fast-flowing river beneath oak forest in the Talamanca mountains, sits among the highest-elevation stops on the Ultimate Costa Rican Wildlife holiday, & its cool, misty air suits the Fiery-throated Hummingbird well. Best known as the signature site for Resplendent Quetzal, this valley also hosts Volcano Hummingbird & other highland specialities alongside the Fiery-throated Hummingbird, making it a rewarding stop for patient photographers. Visiting in November, when the itinerary calls here, gives the best chance of catching this iridescent hummingbird as it works the forest edge. A steady hand & a willingness to wait quietly among the oaks will serve you well in this high-altitude setting.
