What makes photographing golden eagles in Sweden different from anywhere else?

In northern Sweden, the eagles come to you. The hides are positioned so that you are at eye level with a golden eagle landing in deep snow, sometimes less than eight metres away. That proximity, combined with the soft Arctic winter light reflecting off the snowpack, creates a quality of image you simply cannot replicate in warmer climates. The snow acts as a giant reflector, filling shadows from below.

How do you help photographers handle the extreme cold?

The cold is the biggest technical challenge, not the photography itself. Batteries drain fast below minus fifteen, so I make sure everyone carries spares inside their jacket. We talk through layering before the first session, and I always check hands and feet during longer sits. If a photographer is uncomfortable, they cannot concentrate, and the images suffer. Comfort comes first, always.

What is the single image you are most proud of from a NaturesLens trip?

A white-tailed eagle coming in low over fresh snow at sunrise, wings spread wide, with the forest behind completely out of focus in blue shadow. The light was only right for about four minutes that morning. I had positioned the group so the sun was directly behind us, and when the eagle came in on that exact line, everyone got the shot. That is what good guiding looks like — reading the light and putting people in the right place before the moment arrives.
