Species profile
About this species
The Azure-winged Magpie is a striking corvid characterised by its pale greyish-brown body, black cap & nape, & vivid azure-blue wings & tail. It is a social & vocal bird, often found in noisy flocks throughout its range. The species displays a curious disjunct distribution, with populations found in both the Iberian Peninsula & across East Asia.
The Azure-winged Magpie favours open woodland, pine forests, & parkland, often near rivers or woodland edges. In Iberia it is closely associated with stone pine & cork oak woodlands, while Asian populations frequent mixed forests & cultivated areas.

Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning light in spring & summer offers the best conditions, when the blue plumage appears most saturated. The breeding season from April to June provides excellent opportunities to photograph birds carrying nesting material or feeding young.
Position yourself near fruiting trees or woodland edges where flocks congregate, as the birds are more relaxed & approachable when foraging. Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture the vivid blue plumage details without disturbing the flock. Shoot at a slightly higher ISO to maintain a fast shutter speed, as the birds are restless & move quickly between perches.
