Species profile

About this species

The Bananaquit is a small, active nectar-feeding bird found throughout the Caribbean & tropical Americas. It is easily recognised by its distinctive black & yellow plumage, white supercilium, & sharply curved bill adapted for probing flowers. It is a remarkably bold & curious species, often approaching humans closely in search of food sources.

Habitat

Bananaquits inhabit a wide range of tropical & subtropical environments including forest edges, gardens, scrubland, & mangroves, typically where flowering plants & fruit are abundant. They are highly adaptable & commonly found in both wild habitats & urban green spaces across Trinidad & the wider Caribbean.

Best time

Early morning during the April trip to Trinidad offers excellent light & peak activity, as Bananaquits feed most actively at dawn when nectar is freshest. The dry season period around April in Trinidad also means clearer skies & better natural light for photography.

Approach

In Trinidad, position yourself near flowering plants or fruit feeders where Bananaquits regularly visit, as they are creatures of habit & will return repeatedly to the same spots. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze the bird's quick, darting movements between blooms. The species is relatively fearless around people, so allow it to settle & become comfortable before composing your shot for a sharp, well-framed result.
