Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning hours between dawn & 9am are ideal for activity & favourable light. The dry season months of June to September generally offer clearer skies & more consistent conditions in Andean cloud forests.
Position yourself near flowering Heliconia or other tubular blooms where the bird regularly feeds, allowing for predictable flight paths & repeated visits. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1600s to freeze the rapid wingbeats & capture sharp detail in the iridescent plumage. Arrive early in the morning when light is soft & the birds are most actively foraging, giving you better exposure & more natural behaviour to capture.
