Species profile

About this species

The Collared Inca is a striking hummingbird found in the Andean cloud forests of South America, recognised by its iridescent green plumage & distinctive white breast patch bordered by a dark collar. It is a medium-sized hummingbird with a straight bill, well adapted to feeding on the nectar of tubular Andean flowers. Males display particularly vibrant colouration, making them a highly sought-after subject for wildlife photographers.

Habitat

Collared Incas inhabit montane cloud forests & forest edges along the Andes, typically at elevations between 1500 & 3000 metres, where dense vegetation & abundant flowering plants provide both food & shelter.

Best time

Early morning hours shortly after dawn are ideal, as the birds are most active feeding to replenish energy after the cool Andean night. The dry season - typically May to September depending on location - offers clearer skies & more predictable light for photography.

Approach

Position yourself near flowering plants such as bromeliads or Andean heliconias where the bird regularly feeds, as this allows you to pre-focus & anticipate its arrival. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/2000s to freeze the rapid wingbeats & capture sharp detail in the iridescent plumage. Shooting in soft, diffused light rather than harsh midday sun will help reveal the subtle colour shifts in the feathers without overexposure.
