Species profile

About this species

The eastern gray bamboo lemur is a small primate endemic to Madagascar, found primarily in the eastern rainforests of the island. It specialises in feeding on bamboo, particularly young shoots & leaves, & is well adapted to this fibrous diet. The species is considered vulnerable due to habitat loss from deforestation & the degradation of bamboo forests.

Habitat

Eastern humid rainforests & bamboo thickets of Madagascar, typically found at elevations ranging from lowland forest up to around 1800 metres, with a strong association with stands of giant & small bamboo.

Best time

Early morning hours around dawn are ideal, as the species is most active during the cooler parts of the day. The dry season between April & October generally offers better visibility & lighter conditions in the forest.

Approach

Use a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to capture close-up shots without disturbing the animal as it feeds on bamboo. Shoot in burst mode to capture natural movement & behaviour, as these lemurs are often active & agile among the canes. Position yourself quietly at a low angle to achieve eye-level shots that create a more intimate & engaging perspective.
