Field notes
Photography notes
Spring & early autumn mornings are best, when tortoises are most active & basking in warm sunlight. Mid-morning between 8am & 11am tends to offer ideal light & behaviour.
Get low to the ground & shoot at the tortoise's eye level to create a more intimate & engaging perspective. Use natural light in the early morning when the tortoise is basking, as the warm golden light enhances the colours & textures of the shell. A macro or short telephoto lens is ideal for capturing fine shell detail without disturbing the animal.
