Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning hours offer the best light & activity levels, with the dry season between May & October being optimal as birds congregate around shrinking water bodies in the llanos & wetland regions.
Approach wetland edges slowly & quietly to avoid startling birds perched on low vegetation or fence posts, as they are alert & will call loudly before flying off. Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture close-up detail of the distinctive horn & facial features without disturbing the bird. Early morning light is ideal for shooting as birds are most active & the soft light enhances the contrast between dark plumage & bright surroundings.
