Species profile
About this species
The Lesser Violetear is a medium-sized hummingbird found across the highlands of Central & South America, recognised by its glittering green plumage & distinctive violet-blue ear patches. It is a highly active species, often seen hovering at flowering plants while feeding on nectar. Males are notably territorial & will aggressively defend preferred feeding sites from rival hummingbirds.
The Lesser Violetear inhabits montane forest edges, cloud forests, gardens & shrubby areas at elevations typically ranging from 1000 to 3000 metres across Central & South America.

Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning hours shortly after sunrise offer the best light & high activity levels, particularly during the dry season from December to April when flowering plants are abundant.
Position yourself near flowering plants such as salvias or heliconias where the bird regularly feeds, allowing you to anticipate its movements & pre-focus your shot. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/2000s to freeze the rapid wingbeats & achieve sharp images of the bird in flight. Early morning light provides a warm, flattering tone that enhances the iridescent green & violet colouring of the plumage.
