Species profile
About this species
The Martial Eagle is the largest eagle in Africa, with a wingspan reaching up to 2.6 metres & a distinctive dark brown upper body contrasting with white underparts spotted with brown. It is a powerful apex predator capable of taking prey as large as small antelopes & monitor lizards. The species is listed as Vulnerable due to habitat loss, persecution & declining prey availability across its range.
The Martial Eagle favours open & semi-arid woodland, savanna, thornbush & the edges of forest across sub-Saharan Africa. It requires large territories with tall trees for nesting & open areas for hunting, & is commonly found in protected reserves & national parks.

Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning & late afternoon light provide the best conditions for photography, as the eagle is most active during these periods. The dry season between May & October in southern & eastern Africa offers clearer skies & reduced vegetation, making sightings & clear shots more achievable.
Position yourself near known perch sites such as tall trees or pylons at the edge of open woodland, as Martial Eagles often survey their territory from prominent vantage points. Use a long telephoto lens of at least 500mm to capture sharp detail without disturbing the bird, & consider a beanbag or monopod for stability in the field. Patience is essential - visiting the same site repeatedly increases your chances of capturing flight shots as the eagle launches from its perch into the open sky.
