Best time

Late spring to early summer (May to July) during the breeding season at nesting colonies offers the best opportunities, with early morning light providing the most flattering conditions.

Approach

Position yourself at cliff-top seabird colonies during the breeding season for close, eye-level shots of birds on ledges. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/2000s to freeze the motion of birds coming in to land or taking flight. Opt for overcast conditions to reduce harsh contrasts between the bird's black & white plumage, helping to retain detail across the full tonal range.
