Species profile
About this species
The Sparkling Violetear is a large, striking hummingbird found across much of South America, recognised by its iridescent green plumage & distinctive violet-blue ear patches. It is one of the more aggressive hummingbird species, often dominating feeding territories & chasing away smaller birds. The male produces a loud, repetitive metallic song that makes it easier to locate in the field.
The Sparkling Violetear inhabits Andean slopes, mountain forests, shrublands & gardens at elevations typically ranging from 1000m to 3500m across Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia & northern Argentina.

Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning hours between 7am & 10am are ideal, as the birds are most active at feeding sites. The dry season from May to October tends to offer clearer skies & more predictable light in many parts of its range.
Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1600s to freeze the rapid wing beats & capture sharp detail in the iridescent plumage. Position yourself near flowering plants or feeders where the bird regularly perches, allowing you to pre-focus & anticipate its arrival. Shoot in open shade or during overcast conditions to bring out the full range of iridescent colours without harsh reflections.
