Species profile

About this species

Verreaux's Eagle-Owl is the largest owl in Africa & one of the largest owls in the world, recognised by its distinctive pink eyelids & deep brown eyes. It inhabits open woodland, savanna & riverine forests across sub-Saharan Africa, where it is an apex nocturnal predator. The species feeds on a wide range of prey including hedgehogs, mongooses & even other birds of prey.

Habitat

Verreaux's Eagle-Owl favours open & semi-arid woodland, savanna, thornveld & riverine forest across sub-Saharan Africa. It is commonly found near large trees used for roosting & nesting, often close to watercourses, & is well adapted to areas with a mix of open ground & dense cover.

Best time

The best time to photograph Verreaux's Eagle-Owl is at dusk & dawn when the bird is most active. The dry season in southern & eastern Africa, typically May to October, is ideal as reduced vegetation makes locating roosting birds easier & wildlife congregates around water sources.

Approach

Position yourself near known roost sites during the late afternoon to capture the owl as it becomes active at dusk, using a fast lens such as f/2.8 to allow sufficient light in low-light conditions. Focus on the striking pink eyelids as a key distinguishing feature, using a single focus point to ensure sharpness on the face. Use a beanbag or sturdy tripod to stabilise your camera during long exposures & keep noise reduction settings ready for high ISO shooting in dim conditions.
