Species profile
About this species
The American White Pelican is a large waterbird with striking white plumage & black-tipped wings, boasting one of the largest wingspans of any North American bird. It feeds cooperatively in shallow waters, herding fish into groups rather than diving like its Brown Pelican relative. During breeding season, adults develop a distinctive fibrous plate on the upper mandible, adding to their impressive appearance.
American White Pelicans are typically found on large inland lakes, rivers & coastal bays, favouring shallow freshwater & brackish environments where fish are abundant & accessible for cooperative feeding.

Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning light during spring & autumn migration offers ideal conditions, as birds are most active & the soft golden light complements the white plumage beautifully.
Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture detailed shots of pelicans in flight or feeding without disturbing the flock. Position yourself low to the water to achieve eye-level shots that create a more intimate & dramatic perspective. Overcast days help reduce harsh glare off the white plumage, making it easier to retain detail in the bright feathers.
