Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning hours between sunrise & 09:00 local time when birds are most active. The July trips to Brazil coincide with the dry season, which offers clearer skies & reduced foliage density, making July an excellent month to photograph this species.
Listen for drumming & calls to locate birds before they move on, then position yourself with the light source behind you to capture the vibrant head colours. Brazil trips in July offer dry season conditions with better visibility through thinner foliage, so use this to your advantage when shooting in forest edge habitats. A fast shutter speed of at least 1/800s is recommended to freeze any head movement during foraging activity.
