Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning during the September tour in Colombia offers the best light & bird activity. The wet season supports higher concentrations of birds around marshy habitats, making sightings more reliable during the Ultimate Birds of Colombia trip in early September 2027.
Approach marshy & wetland edges slowly & quietly to avoid flushing perched males, as they favour exposed reed stems that offer excellent composition opportunities. In Colombia during the September tour, early morning light provides warm, directional illumination that enhances the contrast between the bright yellow hood & black plumage. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze any movement caused by reeds swaying in the breeze.
