Specific Location

Qing-zang Plateau

NaturesLens visits Qing-zang Plateau on small-group wildlife photography holidays in Tibet, with time here planned around Black-necked Crane, Blue Sheep, Brown Bear, Himalayan Blue Sheep & Himalayan Griffon rather than general sightseeing. Current itineraries using Qing-zang Plateau include Tibetan Wildlife of the Qing-Zang Plateau, with photography shaped around hide, boat-based, flight, night or low-light & landscape & behaviour photography sessions. The Qing-zang Plateau, often referred to as the roof of the world, dominates the landscape of Tibet, forming one of the highest & most extensive elevated regions on Earth. This vast highland is characterised by immense open grasslands, arid steppe, glacial valleys, & high-altitude wetlands, all set against a backdrop of towering peaks & thin, cold air. Its remoteness & elevation have preserved a relatively undisturbed ecosystem, where rivers originating from Himalayan snowmelt feed marshes & lakes that support both resident & migratory wildlife across a dramatic, wind-scoured terrain. This extraordinary environment supports a remarkable assemblage of high-altitude specialists. Herds of Tibetan Antelope, Tibetan Gazelle, & Tibetan Wild Yak graze across the open plains, while Blue Sheep & Himalayan Blue Sheep navigate the rocky slopes, providing key prey for the plateau’s elusive predators. Snow Leopard & Leopard move quietly through the crags, while Tibetan Wolf, Wolf, & the diminutive Pallas Cat hunt smaller mammals such as the ever-watchful Himalayan Marmot. Brown Bear also range across these highlands in search of food. Overhead, Lammergeier & Himalayan Griffon soar on thermals, scanning the terrain for carrion, while the wetlands & grasslands host Black-necked Crane, one of the world’s few high-altitude crane species, alongside the ground-dwelling Tibetan Snowcock, whose calls echo across the slopes at dawn.
