Specific Location

Sierra de Andujar

NaturesLens visits Sierra de Andujar on small-group wildlife photography holidays in Spain, with time here planned around Iberian Lynx rather than general sightseeing. Current itineraries using Sierra de Andujar include Iberian Lynx in Summer, with photography shaped around hide, night or low-light & landscape & behaviour photography sessions. The Sierra de Andujar rises in southern Spain, part of the rugged mountain systems that characterise much of Andalusia’s interior. This landscape of steep slopes, rocky outcrops & Mediterranean scrubland provides the kind of secluded, low-disturbance terrain favoured by the region’s more elusive mammals. Interspersed with patches of native woodland & dense maquis vegetation, the sierra offers a mosaic of cover & open ground that supports a range of prey species, underpinning the presence of its most notable predator. The relative remoteness of the area, combined with its varied topography, makes it a valuable refuge within the wider network of habitats that sustain Iberian wildlife. The standout species associated with the Sierra de Andujar is the Iberian Lynx, one of the world’s rarest & most range-restricted wild cats, & a flagship species for conservation efforts across Spain. Highly adapted to Mediterranean scrub & woodland mosaics, the lynx relies heavily on healthy rabbit populations for prey, & its presence is often taken as an indicator of a functioning, well-balanced ecosystem. Solitary & largely crepuscular, this striking cat is recognisable by its tufted ears, bearded facial ruff & bobbed tail, & sightings remain a rare privilege even within its core territories. Encountering this species in the Sierra de Andujar represents a genuine highlight for wildlife enthusiasts, reflecting both the resilience of the lynx & the ecological value of this Andalusian landscape.
