Is it better to organise your own trip, or join a specialist tour?

For many wildlife photographers, this is one of the biggest decisions before booking their next adventure. It is easy to assume that organising everything independently always provides greater freedom, while a guided tour means trading flexibility for convenience. In reality the decision is more nuanced, particularly when photography rather than sightseeing is the objective.

Independent travel has genuine attractions: planning an itinerary & discovering wildlife through your own persistence can be deeply satisfying. But wildlife photography is rarely defined by simply arriving in the right country or even the right reserve. The photographs that remain memorable are usually the result of timing & an understanding of behaviour that only develops through repeated visits. So the real comparison is not independent travel versus organised travel - it is independent travel versus accumulated experience.

Why isn’t finding wildlife the hardest part?

Anyone can photograph a lion lying beneath a tree in the afternoon heat, but creating an image with atmosphere, light & composition requires a deeper understanding of both photography & behaviour. Experienced guides begin anticipating these situations almost instinctively - skills developed through countless hours in the field rather than learned from a guidebook.

Why do experienced photographers still travel with guided tours?

There is an assumption that guided holidays are aimed primarily at beginners, yet many experienced photographers actively seek them out. A photographer who has invested in long-haul flights & weeks away from home usually wants to spend every available hour making photographs rather than solving logistical problems. Many of our guests value benefiting from years of accumulated local relationships & refined itineraries that would be extremely difficult to replicate independently.

Does this only apply to Africa?

Exactly the same principles apply wherever wildlife is found. Photographing jaguars in Brazil demands an understanding of river systems; hummingbirds in South America rely on flowering cycles; brown bears in Finland or puffins around the North Atlantic all require detailed knowledge gained only through repeated experience. NaturesLens has never been simply an African safari company - every itinerary begins with the same question: will this help our guests create stronger images?

So which should you choose?

There is no universally correct answer, because every photographer values different things. Independent adventures offer complete freedom & the satisfaction of discovering wildlife through your own efforts. Specialist tours provide access to years of experience & opportunities that have often taken decades to develop. The decision comes down to whether your priority is the process of planning, or returning home with the strongest possible photographs.

  • NaturesLens trips are designed around photographic opportunity - schedules, positions, & access are all structured to give you the best light.
  • Groups of 4 - 8 photographers ensure unhurried access & individual guidance.
  • Single occupancy is included as standard on the majority of our wildlife photography holidays.
