When choosing a wildlife photography holiday, it is natural to begin with the destination, the species, the season & the photographic opportunities. Yet one of the most important questions is often left unasked: who will actually be with you once the tour begins?

A wildlife photography holiday may be designed, marketed & sold under the name of one company while the experience on the ground is delivered almost entirely by somebody else. Guests arrive, meet a local guide or ground operator & discover that the company they booked with has no representative travelling with them.

NaturesLens takes a different approach. Every one of our tours is accompanied throughout by a member of the NaturesLens guiding team, working alongside trusted local specialists whose knowledge & relationships make each itinerary stronger. Those local people may be naturalists, trackers, drivers, boatmen, fixers or lodge owners - many have become trusted friends through years of working together - but they do not replace the NaturesLens guiding team.

Is a local specialist enough on their own?

An experienced local specialist may be one of the most valuable people involved in a wildlife photography tour, with knowledge that cannot be replicated by somebody arriving for a relatively short visit. But their role is not always the same as the role of a photography leader. Some local guides work primarily with birdwatchers or mixed-interest groups without approaching every decision from a photographer’s perspective.

What does a NaturesLens-led tour add?

A locally run trip can provide an excellent experience, particularly where the local operator understands photography. The distinction lies in what happens when a guest books with one company but is handed over entirely to another organisation after arrival. A NaturesLens guide knows how the itinerary was developed & how the days are intended to work for photographers. The local specialists help us deliver a better tour; the NaturesLens guide ensures their contributions come together as one coherent, image-first holiday.

What this partnership looks like on the ground

In Costa Rica, we have developed trusted relationships with people including Erick, Agustin, Tony, Sergio, Edward, Cope, Franco & Omar, each bringing a different depth of knowledge. Our Essential Costa Rica, Ultimate Costa Rica & Wildlife Icons of Costa Rica tours each follow a different route - but a NaturesLens guide remains with the group throughout, providing the thread connecting the different locations & hosts.

In Extremadura, we work closely with Teo & Manolo; on our Iberian Lynx holidays, with Antonia, Lute, Miriam & Sylvia. Our Pelicans of Lake Kerkini tours rely on a boatman we have worked with for more than a decade. In Bandhavgarh, an established team of drivers, guides & fixers read the landscape for our Bengal Tiger tours. The same model repeats in Morocco, Bulgaria & Iceland, wherever seasonal, highly specific local knowledge shapes the day. In every case, the specialists may change as the itinerary moves between regions, but the NaturesLens guide remains with the group throughout.

Will there actually be a NaturesLens guide with us?

Yes. Every NaturesLens tour is accompanied throughout by a member of our guiding team, who considers light, background & the needs of different photographers, & who remains responsible for how the holiday responds when plans change. Working with local expertise is not the same as handing over the guest experience - when you book with NaturesLens, you are booking a NaturesLens-led wildlife photography holiday from beginning to end.

  • NaturesLens trips are designed around photographic opportunity - schedules, positions, & access are all structured to give you the best light.
  • Groups of 4 - 8 photographers ensure unhurried access & individual guidance.
  • Single occupancy is included as standard on the majority of our wildlife photography holidays.
