Species profile

About this species

The Green Iguana is a large, arboreal lizard native to Central & South America, as well as parts of the Caribbean. Despite its name, its colouring can range from bright green to brown or even orange depending on age, location & health. It is a herbivorous species that spends much of its time basking in the tree canopy alongside rivers & other water sources.

Habitat

Tropical & subtropical rainforests, woodland edges & riverbanks across Central & South America & the Caribbean, where iguanas favour tall trees overhanging water.

Best time

Early morning during the dry season, typically November to April, when iguanas emerge to bask in the first sunlight of the day, making them easier to locate & photograph against warm, golden light.

Approach

Position yourself at eye level with the iguana to achieve a more natural & engaging perspective, as shooting downward can flatten the image. Use a telephoto lens of at least 200mm to avoid disturbing the animal & to compress the background foliage into pleasing colour. Prioritise a fast shutter speed of 1/500s or above when the iguana is active, but take advantage of basking periods for sharper, more detailed shots.

Trips featuring Green Iguana

The holidays below are pulled from the same species relationship, so the guide stays tied to live departures rather than becoming a static article.

Photographing Green Iguana The Green Iguana is one of the most instantly recognisable reptiles in Central America &, for photographers, one of the most underrated. Large adults - especially old males with their heavy dewlaps, spiny dorsal crests, & subtly jewelled scales - are genuinely impressive photographic subjects that repay careful attention to light, angle, & detail. Riparian adults basking above rivers are often extraordinarily confiding, allowing close approach from a boat or bank position. Where NaturesLens Takes You NaturesLens photographers encounter Green Iguanas along rivers, lake margins, & forest edges throughout Costa Rica’s lowlands. Morning river excursions are particularly productive: large adults bask on branches above the water to thermoregulate, often sitting motionless for extended periods & tolerating a close approach from a quiet boat. Photography Technique & Gear A 200-500mm zoom handles river encounters well & from boat level places the lens at eye-level with basking animals. Focus on the eye & dewlap area - the textural complexity of the facial scales is the most rewarding close-focus subject. Overcast light reveals scale colour best; bright sun can flatten the subtle iridescence of the dorsal crest. The photography holidays listed below operate in regions & habitats where the Green Iguana is regularly encountered. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed, but our itineraries are designed around seasonal behaviour, suitable habitat, & photographic opportunity, giving you the best possible chance of meaningful encounters in the field. Our small-group approach allows time in the field to adapt to conditions, behaviour, & photographic opportunities as they unfold. You can photograph the Green Iguana in Costa Rica. During our photography holidays, the Green Iguana is often photographed alongside Basilisk Lizard, Blue Jeans Poison Dart Frog, Chestnut-headed Oropendola, Chestnut-mandibled Toucan, Collared Aracari, & Emerald Toucanet. Seasonal presence & photographic opportunity vary by location & time of year. Photography themes commonly associated with this species include amphibian macro photography, Costa Rican photography, Costa Rican wildlife, frog photography, macro photography of flowers, insects & other miniature flora & fauna, & macro photography subjects.
