Ramphastos swainsonii

Explore our Chestnut-mandibled Toucan photography holidays in Costa Rica, timed so photographers have strong chances to work with this species during fruiting seasons from late dry season into early wet season. Our small-group photography holidays prioritise time in the field, light, behaviour, positioning & repeatable photographic opportunities rather than rushed wildlife viewing.

Species profile

About this species

The Chestnut-mandibled Toucan is a large, striking bird found in Central & South America, recognisable by its vivid yellow & black plumage & its distinctive two-toned bill, which is yellow on top & chestnut-brown beneath. It is the second-largest toucan species & is commonly found in humid tropical forests & forest edges. The species is highly vocal, producing loud, repetitive calls that carry considerable distances through the forest canopy.

Habitat

Humid lowland & foothill tropical forests, forest edges, & partially open areas with tall trees, ranging from sea level up to around 1500 metres elevation across Central America & north-western South America.

Best time

Early morning hours between 6am & 9am offer the best light & highest activity levels, particularly during fruiting seasons from late dry season into early wet season when food sources are abundant.

Approach

Position yourself near fruiting trees at forest edges where toucans regularly feed, as this allows for clear sightlines without dense foliage obscuring your subject. Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture close detail while maintaining a respectful distance that avoids disturbing natural behaviour. Expose carefully for the high contrast between the bright yellow chest & dark body, using spot metering on the bird to avoid blown highlights.

Trips featuring Chestnut-mandibled Toucan

The holidays below are pulled from the same species relationship, so the guide stays tied to live departures rather than becoming a static article.

Photographing Chestnut-mandibled Toucan The largest toucan in Costa Rica, the Chestnut-mandibled Toucan - sometimes called Yellow-throated Toucan - commands immediate attention: a deep chestnut lower mandible, vivid yellow upper bill, & bright yellow throat make identification instant. It inhabits humid forest & tall secondary growth from the foothills to around 1,500 metres, & though slightly less feeder-confiding than its Keel-Billed cousin, it is a guaranteed visual highlight of any Costa Rica wildlife photography trip. Where NaturesLens Takes You NaturesLens photographers encounter the Chestnut-mandibled Toucan on Caribbean-slope forest sections & at higher-elevation lodge gardens, where fruiting trees attract birds to predictable perches. Pairs & small groups typically move through the canopy in the early morning before retiring through the heat of the day. Photography Technique & Gear The bill contrast - chestnut below, yellow above - requires careful metering since both tones occupy the same frame. Evaluative or matrix metering with slight positive compensation (+0.3-0.7 EV) works reliably. A 400-600mm focal length is useful here as the bird tends to perch higher in the canopy than the Keel-Billed; shoot early for the lowest-angled light across the yellow throat. The photography holidays listed below operate in regions & habitats where the Chestnut-mandibled Toucan is regularly encountered. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed, but our itineraries are designed around seasonal behaviour, suitable habitat, & photographic opportunity, giving you the best possible chance of meaningful encounters in the field. Our small-group approach allows time in the field to adapt to conditions, behaviour, & photographic opportunities as they unfold. You can photograph the Chestnut-mandibled Toucan in Costa Rica. During our photography holidays, the Chestnut-mandibled Toucan is often photographed alongside Basilisk Lizard, Blue Jeans Poison Dart Frog, Chestnut-headed Oropendola, Collared Aracari, Emerald Toucanet, & Fiery-throated Hummingbird. Seasonal presence & photographic opportunity vary by location & time of year. Photography themes commonly associated with this species include amphibian macro photography, Costa Rican photography, Costa Rican wildlife, frog photography, macro photography of flowers, insects & other miniature flora & fauna, & macro photography subjects.
