Species profile

About this species

The barking deer, also known as the Indian muntjac, is a small to medium-sized deer native to South & Southeast Asia. It is named for its distinctive dog-like barking call, which it uses to alert others to predators or during territorial disputes. Males possess short antlers & prominent facial glands, giving them a characteristically wrinkled appearance around the forehead.

Habitat

Barking deer inhabit a range of environments including tropical & subtropical forests, scrublands, grassland edges, & hilly terrain with dense understorey vegetation across South & Southeast Asia.

Best time

Early morning & late afternoon during the cooler months of October to March offer the best light & increased animal activity. Dawn is particularly productive as barking deer tend to feed in open areas before retreating to dense cover.

Approach

Approach slowly & quietly during early morning hours when the deer are most active, using natural cover to avoid detection. Use a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to maintain a respectful distance while capturing detailed shots of the animal's facial features & colouring. Listen for the distinctive barking call to locate individuals before they spot you, & position yourself downwind to prevent your scent from alarming them.
