Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning & late afternoon during the cooler months of October to March offer the best light & most active behaviour. Midday heat often causes the macaques to rest in shade, reducing photographic opportunities.
Position yourself at a low angle to capture engaging eye-level portraits that convey the monkey's expressive facial features. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/500s to freeze the movement of these highly active & agile animals. Visit temple sites or waterfronts where troops gather, as these locations offer natural framing opportunities & predictable animal behaviour.
