Falanouc Photography Holidays

Eupleres goudotii

Species profile

About this species

The Falanouc is a small, mongoose-like carnivore endemic to Madagascar, belonging to the family Eupleridae. It has a slender body, pointed snout, & feeds primarily on invertebrates such as earthworms & slugs found in moist forest floors. It is considered a vulnerable species due to habitat loss & is rarely encountered in the wild.

Habitat

Dense humid rainforests & marshland areas of eastern Madagascar, particularly near streams & wet forest floors rich in invertebrate prey.

Best time

Early morning or late afternoon during the wet season (November to April) when the species is most active & foraging on the forest floor.

Approach

Move slowly & quietly through forest undergrowth as Falaoucs are shy & easily startled by sudden movement. Use a fast lens with a wide aperture such as f/2.8 to capture sharp images in the low-light conditions of dense forest floors. Position yourself at ground level to achieve a natural perspective & reveal the animal's environment.
