Species profile

About this species

The greater dwarf lemur is a small nocturnal primate endemic to Madagascar, found primarily in the eastern rainforests of the island. It is one of the largest species within the dwarf lemur family, capable of storing fat in its tail to survive periods of hibernation during the dry season. This species is known for its large reflective eyes, which are well adapted to low-light conditions.

Habitat

Eastern tropical rainforests of Madagascar, including mid-altitude humid forests with dense canopy cover & abundant fruiting trees.

Best time

Night-time hours are essential for photographing this nocturnal species. The best period is during the wet season between October & April when the lemurs are most active, before they enter their hibernation phase.

Approach

Use a red-filtered torch or low-intensity red light to locate & observe the lemur without disturbing its behaviour, as red light is less disruptive to nocturnal species. Shoot with a wide aperture lens such as f/1.8 or f/2.8 combined with a high ISO setting to capture sharp images in low-light forest conditions. Move slowly & steadily when approaching, as sudden movements will cause the animal to retreat into dense foliage.
