Species profile
About this species
The Hog Deer is a small, stocky deer native to South & Southeast Asia, named for its hog-like manner of running with its head held low through undergrowth. It has a distinctive build with short legs, a barrel-shaped body & a brown coat that may feature faint spots along the flanks. The species is considered endangered across much of its range due to habitat loss & hunting pressure.
Tall grasslands, reed beds & floodplain areas along river valleys, particularly in the foothills of the Himalayas & across South & Southeast Asia

Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning & late afternoon during the cooler months of October to March, when deer are most active & visibility through grassland is improved
Approach slowly & quietly through tall grassland habitats, keeping a low profile to avoid startling the deer. Use a long telephoto lens of at least 300mm to maintain distance while capturing detailed portraits of this shy & elusive species. Early morning light in open floodplain areas offers excellent opportunities as the deer graze or rest before retreating into cover.
