Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning & late afternoon during the dry season - October to March - when elephants gather near water sources & rivers, making them easier to locate & photograph in good light.
Use a long telephoto lens of at least 300mm to capture close detail while maintaining a safe & respectful distance from the herd. Shoot at eye level where possible by positioning yourself low to the ground, which creates a more intimate & compelling perspective. Early morning light offers soft golden tones that complement the grey skin tones & dusty textures of the elephants beautifully.
