Species profile
About this species
The Iberian Lynx is the world's most endangered wild cat species, native to the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe. It is characterised by its distinctive spotted coat, tufted ears, & short bobbed tail, with adults typically weighing between 7 & 15 kilograms. Once on the brink of extinction, conservation efforts in Spain & Portugal have helped populations recover to several hundred individuals.
The Iberian Lynx favours Mediterranean scrubland, open woodland, & dense maquis vegetation interspersed with open clearings, typically in areas with abundant rabbit populations across southwestern Spain & southern Portugal.

Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning & late afternoon during autumn & winter offer the best light & activity levels, as cooler temperatures encourage more frequent movement & hunting behaviour.
Position yourself near rabbit warrens or scrubland edges at dawn, as the lynx is most active during early morning hunting. Use a long telephoto lens of at least 400mm to maintain a respectful distance without disturbing the animal's natural behaviour. Wear muted, earth-toned clothing & remain downwind to avoid alerting the lynx to your presence, as they are highly sensitive to human scent & movement.
