Species profile

About this species

The Malagasy giant hognose snake is the largest member of the Leioheterodon genus, native to Madagascar, reaching lengths of up to 1.5 metres. It is a diurnal, terrestrial species known for its distinctly upturned snout, which it uses to dig through soil in search of prey such as lizards, frogs & small mammals. The species displays a striking yellowish-brown colouration with dark blotching, making it a visually compelling subject for wildlife photography.

Habitat

Dry deciduous forests, scrubland & open savanna environments across western & southern Madagascar, often found in sandy or rocky substrate

Field notes

Photography notes

Best time

Mid-morning to early afternoon during the dry season (April to October) when the snake is most active & ambient light is strong & directional

Approach

Approach slowly & low to the ground to avoid startling the snake, as it may flatten its body or feign aggression when threatened. Use a macro or short telephoto lens in the 100-200mm range to capture fine scale detail & the distinctive upturned snout without crowding the animal. Look for individuals actively foraging in open areas, as natural daylight will illuminate their patterning far more effectively than diffused light under dense canopy.
