Species profile

About this species

The Masoala woolly lemur is a small nocturnal primate endemic to the Masoala Peninsula in north-eastern Madagascar. It has dense, woolly grey-brown fur, large reflective eyes adapted for low-light conditions, & a relatively short snout. This species is considered endangered due to habitat loss from deforestation & illegal logging within its restricted range.

Habitat

Lowland & mid-altitude tropical rainforest on the Masoala Peninsula in north-eastern Madagascar, typically found in dense primary forest at elevations below 800 metres.

Best time

Nocturnal activity means the best photography opportunities are between dusk & midnight. The dry season from May to October offers more stable weather & clearer forest paths on the Masoala Peninsula.

Approach

Use a head torch or red-light torch to locate the lemurs eye-shine in the canopy at night without disturbing them. A fast lens with a wide aperture such as f/2.8 combined with high ISO settings will help capture sharp images in low-light forest conditions. Work with a local guide who knows the area well, as spotting this cryptic species in dense rainforest requires considerable experience & patience.
