Species profile

About this species

The pale fork-marked lemur is a small nocturnal primate endemic to Madagascar, characterised by a distinctive dark fork-shaped marking running from the eyes to the top of the head. It has large eyes adapted for night vision & a long tongue used to feed on nectar, tree gums & secretions. This species is found in the dry deciduous forests of south-western Madagascar & is listed as vulnerable due to habitat loss.

Best time

Active after dark, so night-time photography is essential - the dry season between April & October offers clearer skies & more predictable conditions in its south-western Madagascar habitat.

Approach

Use a high ISO setting & a fast lens to capture sharp images in low-light nocturnal conditions. Work with a red-filtered torch to locate the animal without disturbing its natural behaviour, then switch briefly to a diffused flash for the shot. Focus on the distinctive fork marking on the head & the large reflective eyes to create a compelling portrait.
