Species profile
About this species
Parrots are a diverse order of birds comprising roughly 400 species, found predominantly in tropical & subtropical regions across the world. They are characterised by their curved beaks, vibrant plumage, zygodactyl feet, & remarkable intelligence. Many species are highly social, forming large flocks & exhibiting complex behaviours including tool use & vocal mimicry.
Parrots are typically found in tropical & subtropical rainforests, woodlands, savannahs, & scrublands. Many species favour areas with abundant fruiting trees, forest edges, & riparian zones, while some have adapted to more arid environments or even urban settings.

Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning hours around sunrise are ideal when parrots are most active at feeding sites. The dry season in tropical regions often concentrates birds around reliable water & food sources, making sightings more predictable.
Position yourself near fruiting trees or known feeding sites early in the morning when flocks are most active & light is soft. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze wing movement, especially when capturing birds in flight or during squabbles at perches. A telephoto lens of 400mm or longer will allow you to maintain distance & avoid disturbing the birds while still achieving frame-filling shots.
