Species profile

About this species

The Pelagic Cormorant is a small, slender seabird found along the rocky coastlines of the North Pacific Ocean. It has striking iridescent plumage of deep green & purple, with a distinctive red facial skin patch during the breeding season. Despite its name, it tends to stay close to shore rather than venturing far out to sea.

Habitat

Rocky coastlines, sea cliffs & offshore islands along the North Pacific coast, from Alaska & British Columbia down to Baja California & across to the coasts of Russia & Japan. Prefers sheltered inlets & coves for nesting on narrow cliff ledges.

Best time

Spring & early summer during the breeding season offer the most visually rewarding opportunities, with birds displaying colourful plumage & nesting activity. Early morning light along the Pacific coastline provides the best conditions for capturing the iridescent sheen of the feathers.

Approach

Position yourself low & close to rocky shorelines at dawn when light is soft & golden, as this highlights the iridescent plumage beautifully. Focus on nesting colonies during breeding season to capture courtship behaviour & display of the vivid red facial skin. Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to avoid disturbing the birds while still achieving tight, well-composed portraits.
