Species profile

About this species

The red-fronted brown lemur is a medium-sized primate native to Madagascar, recognised by the reddish-brown patch on the forehead of males & the creamy-white patch on females. They are highly social animals that live in mixed groups & are active during both day & night, making them cathemeral in their activity patterns. They feed primarily on fruit, leaves & flowers, playing an important role in seed dispersal within their forest habitat.

Habitat

Dry deciduous forests & gallery forests in western Madagascar, as well as humid rainforests in the south-east of the island, typically occupying mid-canopy & understorey vegetation layers.

Best time

Early morning hours throughout the dry season from April to October, when groups are most active & light levels are favourable in Madagascar's western & southern forests.

Approach

Approach groups slowly & quietly during feeding bouts when individuals are focused on foraging rather than potential threats. Use a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to capture close portraits without disturbing natural behaviour. Early morning light in open canopy areas provides warm, directional light that brings out the rich reddish & brown tones of their fur.
