Satanic leaf-tailed gecko Photography Holidays

Uroplatus phantasticus

Species profile

About this species

The satanic leaf-tailed gecko is a small reptile endemic to the rainforests of Madagascar, renowned for its extraordinary camouflage that mimics a dead or decaying leaf. It has a flattened, irregularly shaped tail & mottled brown colouration complete with vein-like markings & notched edges that make it virtually indistinguishable from leaf litter. When threatened, it can open its mouth wide to reveal a bright red interior, a startling defensive display that likely inspired its dramatic common name.

Habitat

Humid montane & lowland rainforests of eastern Madagascar, typically found resting on branches or among leaf litter at low to mid-level vegetation

Best time

Night-time during the wet season from November to April, when the geckos are most active & rainfall keeps vegetation lush

Approach

Use a macro lens to capture the intricate leaf-mimicking texture & colouration of the skin. Shoot with a diffused off-camera flash to reveal fine detail without harsh shadows on the forest floor. Move slowly & deliberately when composing your shot, as sudden movements will cause the gecko to flee or flatten itself further against its substrate.
