Short-nosed chameleon Photography Holidays

Rhampholeon brevicaudatus

Species profile

About this species

The short-nosed chameleon, also known as the bearded pygmy chameleon, is a small chameleon species native to the coastal forests of East Africa, particularly Tanzania & Kenya. It is characterised by its stubby tail, compact body, & remarkable ability to mimic dead leaves on the forest floor. Unlike many chameleons, it is primarily a ground-dwelling species, moving slowly through leaf litter & low vegetation.

Habitat

Coastal & montane forest floor environments in East Africa, particularly among dense leaf litter, low shrubs & undergrowth in humid forests of Tanzania & Kenya.

Best time

Early morning during the dry season (June to October) when chameleons are most active & easier to spot on low vegetation or leaf litter before temperatures peak.

Approach

Use a macro lens to capture fine skin texture & the intricate leaf-like patterning of this small species. Shoot at eye level by positioning your camera close to the forest floor, using a beanbag or small tripod for stability. Avoid using harsh direct flash as it can startle the animal - instead opt for a diffused off-camera flash or natural side lighting filtering through the canopy.
