About this species

The spiny-tailed iguana is a large lizard native to Central America & Mexico, known for being one of the fastest running lizards in the world. It has a distinctive tail covered in whorls of spiny scales, which it uses as a defensive weapon. Adults display striking coloration, with males often showing bold black & grey banding across their bodies.

Best time

Mid-morning between 8am & 11am when the iguanas are basking in the sun to regulate body temperature. The dry season from November to April is ideal as vegetation is sparse & sightings are more frequent.

Approach

Approach slowly & from a low angle to avoid startling the iguana, as they are highly alert & will flee quickly if threatened. Photograph during the morning basking period when individuals are less active & more tolerant of close approach. Use a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to capture detailed shots of the spiny tail & facial features without disturbing the subject.
