Best time

Early morning hours shortly after dawn offer the best light & highest activity levels, as hummingbirds feed intensively at this time. The dry season between June & September generally provides clearer conditions & more predictable behaviour across Andean habitats.

Approach

Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/2000s to freeze the rapid wingbeats & capture sharp detail in the plumage. Position yourself near flowering plants such as Heliconia or Bromeliads where the species regularly feeds, allowing you to anticipate flight paths & pre-focus on a likely perch. Shoot in soft, diffused light to bring out the iridescent colours without harsh glare on the feathers.
