Species profile

About this species

The Worm Snake, also known as the Smooth Snake, is a small, slender non-venomous snake native to Europe, including Bulgaria. It typically reaches 60-70 cm in length & displays a greyish or brownish colouration with darker spots or streaks along its dorsal surface. It is a secretive & docile species, often found beneath rocks, logs, or in dense vegetation.

Habitat

Dry, warm habitats such as heathland, open woodland edges, rocky hillsides & scrubby grassland, often where suitable refugia like flat stones or woody debris are present.

Best time

Late morning to early afternoon on warm spring days is ideal, as snakes bask to thermoregulate after cool nights. The May trip to Bulgaria (20270512) aligns well with peak activity during spring emergence, making it an excellent time to encounter this species.

Approach

Search beneath flat rocks, logs & debris in warm, sunny areas as Worm Snakes are highly secretive & rarely seen in the open. Use a macro lens or close-focus wide-angle lens to capture fine scale detail & environmental context in a single frame. Photograph gently & quickly after discovery, keeping disturbance minimal & replacing cover objects carefully after the encounter.
