Species profile
About this species
The Yellow-bellied Toad is a small, warty amphibian found across central & southern Europe, typically measuring 3-5 cm in length. It is named for its striking yellow & black mottled underside, which it displays as a warning to predators in a defensive posture known as the Unkenreflex. The dorsal surface is grey-brown & textured, providing excellent camouflage against rocky & muddy substrates.
Shallow, often temporary pools, puddles, slow-moving streams & marshy areas in hilly & mountainous regions, typically associated with open woodland, meadows & rocky terrain across central & southern Europe.

Field notes
Photography notes
Late spring & early summer offer the best opportunities, with the Bulgaria trip in May 2027 falling in an ideal window. Warm, sunny mornings are optimal as toads bask & call actively in shallow water following overnight temperatures rising.
Get low to the water surface to capture the toad at eye level, emphasising its environment & producing a more engaging composition. When visiting Bulgaria in May, look for individuals calling & basking in shallow, sun-warmed puddles or stream margins during the warmer parts of the day. Use a macro lens or close-focus setting to highlight the vivid yellow & black patterning on the belly by gently encouraging the toad into its defensive arched display posture.
