July is a genuinely strong month for us, & it’s one I get asked about a lot because it covers such different ground: tropical colour in South America, Europe’s rarest cat in warm Iberian light, high-altitude macro in Bulgaria, & one of the most reliable brown bear encounters we run anywhere. If you’re trying to decide where to point a camera this month, here’s what’s actually on.
Why is Brazil one of the best July destinations for tropical bird photography?
Our Birds of Brazil holiday departs this month & it’s built entirely around the Atlantic Forest’s tanagers, toucans & hummingbirds, species like the saffron toucanet, the red-necked tanager & the glittering-bellied emerald, all photographed from carefully positioned feeders & perches rather than snatched in passing. What surprises most photographers is the sheer density of colour on a single trip, there isn’t really another destination we run that fills a portfolio this quickly with birds this vivid.
Fill your portfolio with tropical colour
Birds of Brazil gives you frame-filling access to over twenty species of tanager, toucan & hummingbird across a single, carefully planned itinerary.

Why is the Iberian lynx worth photographing in July specifically?
Iberian Lynx in Summer puts you in hides in Andalucia for Europe’s rarest cat, & July gives you a genuinely different portfolio from the same species compared with our December departure: warmer light, longer days & the lynx at its most active around dawn & dusk. It’s patient, hide-based photography rather than a driven safari, a shape emerging from scrub, held eye contact for a second or two, earned through stillness rather than pursuit. If cooler light & sparser winter scrub appeal more, the same cat is on offer again in December.
What’s the weather actually like for these July trips?
It varies enormously by destination rather than following one rule. Andalucia & the Bulgarian high country are hot & dry in July, Brazil’s Atlantic Forest stays warm & humid, & Finland’s forests sit at a genuinely comfortable temperature for long days in a hide. We brief every guest on what to pack & expect well before departure.
Why is Bulgaria worth visiting for macro photography in July?
Bulgarian Mountain Butterfly Macro moves our butterfly season up into the high country this month, apollo, chequered skipper & mountain ringlet among the subjects, all photographed against alpine meadows most photographers never associate with butterfly macro at all. It’s a slower, more deliberate kind of photography than most of what’s on this list, & that’s precisely the appeal.
Why are Finland’s brown bears one of the most reliable encounters we run?
Brown Bears of Finland puts you in hides on the country’s eastern border, & it’s a trip I keep coming back to because the access is genuinely dependable rather than a matter of luck. White-tailed eagles & wolverines both turn up regularly on the same hides, but it’s the brown bears themselves, working the forest edge in soft, long midsummer light, that photographers come back talking about.
Photograph brown bears with genuinely dependable access
Hides on Finland’s eastern border give you long midsummer light & repeated opportunities with brown bears, white-tailed eagles & wolverines.

Do I need previous experience to join any of these July trips?
No. Every trip on this list is guided throughout, & our guides adjust pace, positioning & instruction to whoever’s in the group, whether that’s a first hide session or a twentieth. What matters more than experience is patience, all four of these trips reward photographers willing to wait for the moment rather than chase it.
Which of these July trips should you choose?
Choose Brazil for volume & colour in a single tropical portfolio. Choose Spain for patient, hide-based access to Europe’s rarest cat in warm summer light. Choose Bulgaria if alpine macro is more your discipline than anything with fur or feathers. Choose Finland for one of the most dependable large-mammal encounters we run anywhere.
Four trips, four continents’ worth of photographic discipline packed into one month, tropical volume in Brazil, patient predator work in Spain, alpine macro in Bulgaria, & dependable big-mammal access in Finland. Whichever one matches what you’re after, July is one of the better months in our calendar to book.
