For those who are a keen amateur wildlife photographer who wants serious time in the field, our ultimate Birds of Colombia wildlife photography tour running from 6th to 23rd September 2027 is designed for you. Over 18 days you will explore some of the most productive birding regions of Colombia, with small groups, reliable setups & long photography sessions that let you focus on what matters most, your photography.
One of the great strengths of this itinerary is the sheer range of species you will encounter. Colombia’s rich ecosystems support everything from tiny, fast-moving hummingbirds to bold, charismatic toucans & colourful flocks of tanagers. You will have close photographic opportunities with species such as the sword-billed hummingbird, booted racket-tail, white-booted racket-tail, red-headed barbet, grey-breasted mountain toucan, a wide range of quetzals & an impressive selection of manakins with vibrant plumage & entertaining behaviour.
The iconic Andean Cock-of-the-Rock will undoubtedly be a highlight, as you spend time at established leks capturing their dramatic displays. Mixed feeding stations provide a steady rotation of birds, allowing you to build strong portraits, behavioural images & varied compositions. The diversity within this Birds of Colombia wildlife photography tour means you return home with an exceptional & well-rounded portfolio.
Another important part of this ultimate Birds of Colombia wildlife photography tour is the wide range of photographic techniques you will be able to practise. You will shoot hummingbirds in soft natural light to capture subtle feather detail, wing blur & gentle environmental compositions. Alongside this you will also work with several multi-flash hummingbird setups that allow you to freeze wings in perfect clarity, control backgrounds, sculpt light & create dynamic images that are impossible to achieve by natural light alone. These professional multi-flash rigs give you complete creative flexibility, from crisp motion-stopping frames to more artistic mixes of blur & sharpness.
In addition to hummingbird work, you will refine techniques for photographing fast-moving tanagers at feeders, composing toucans on natural perches & capturing low-light scenes within cloud forest habitats. The variety ensures you grow your skills through every session.
The schedule for our Birds of Colombia wildlife photography tour has been planned to maximise productive time with the birds. You will work from established feeding stations, hides & gardens that provide clean backgrounds & predictable behaviour, so you can practise flight photography, refine your composition & work on portraits in good light. Group size is kept small, which means more space at each setup, calmer sessions & the chance to ask for experienced guidance whenever you need it.
Between locations you will travel through varied landscapes that show why South America is so rich in birdlife. Misty cloud forest, higher Andean slopes, lush foothills & rural valleys all feature within this ultimate Birds of Colombia wildlife photography tour. Comfortable lodges, good food & unhurried transfers keep the pace manageable, so you can stay focused on image making rather than logistics.
